선수과목(선수학습)
The equivalent of the successful completion of a undergraduate Semantics course or permission of the instructor.

1.수업목표
Lexical semantics is a field in philosophy, psychology, computer science and linguistics which deals (mainly) with word meaning. It covers various theories of the structure of words, the differences and similarities in lexical semantic structure between different languages, and the relationship of word meaning to sentence meaning and syntax.

This course is intended to introduce basic issues and concepts in the linguistic study of word meaning, as well as the relation between the semantics of words and other aspects of meaning, such as truth-conditional (propositional) meaning and context-dependent (pragmatic) meaning.

A question asked is if meaning is established by looking at the neighbourhood in the semantic net a word is part of and by looking at the other words it occurs with in natural sentences or if the meaning is already locally contained in a word. Another question is how words map to concepts. As tools, lexical relations like {synonymy}, {antonymy} (opposites), {hyponymy} and {hypernymy} are used in this field.

Aims of the course are as follows:

- To familiarise students with the basic concepts, models and fundamental problems in Lexical Semantics

- To identify and explore the multifaceted nature of meaning, including both language-internal and language-external aspects of meaning, and the relationship between the two

- To explore the relations between the field of Semantics and other disciplines, especially computer science and natural language processing

- Weekly reading and discussion leadership: 20%

- Oral presentation: 30%
